Jan Tschichold Project

This project was about Jan Tschichold and making a book cover that represents him; His personality, color, the way he worked, etc.. These projects show hierarchy of typographical elements. Book dimensions are 7"x10"x1" with 3 Total colors.
Jan Tschichold made the penguin books and they were orange on the outside of the book to get people to look at it, and I wanted the orange to be his name to know this is about him; I used squares around the name just like the old type press they used back in the day. The color blue made the orange pop even more. I used lines on the bottom to show importance like his work and he loved to use linear lines in his work.

With this book cover I wanted to use the orange but in a different way/ structurally in a shape. Squares make the illusion of being perfect and clean, and Jan loved to use squares for that reason. I wanted the main focus to be on his name but in a creative way besides just being bold.
This cover is a whole 360 that I wanted to try, and loved! Wanted a modern take because back in Jan's day he was the new modern, so I put our spin on modern now with his name. Jan is all around the book to show that it is all about him; Jan was very selfish and wanted to represent that. The color choices really make a statement. I wanted the yellow to pop out the most, so I put a grey and black together to show it was still there but yellow being dominant, just like Jan.

The final full spread of the final cover. Shows his name, with cool linear takes, but also modern. It catches people's eye but also tells a story that you will not put down.
